Zanzibar Visa & Entry Requirements: The Complete 2027 Guide
16 July 2026
Ask about Zanzibar visas in any travel Facebook group and you'll get flooded with conflicting answers — some people swear it's visa-on-arrival only, others insist you need to apply online weeks ahead, and somewhere in the replies someone's selling "visa assistance" for a fee you don't need to pay. Here's the actual, current answer.
Do You Need a Visa for Zanzibar?
Yes, most nationalities need a visa to enter Zanzibar (as part of Tanzania). You have two options.
Option 1: E-Visa (Recommended)
Apply online in advance at the official Tanzania immigration portal. This is the safer, more predictable route — you land with everything already confirmed.
- Cost: $50 USD for most nationalities, $100 USD for US citizens (multiple entry)
- Apply at least a few days before travel, ideally more during peak season
- You'll need a passport valid 6+ months from your entry date, with at least one blank page, plus proof of onward/return travel and accommodation
Option 2: Visa on Arrival
Still available at Zanzibar's airport, though you'll see conflicting claims online about this — some outdated posts say it's been abolished. As of now, it remains an option, but arriving with an e-visa already sorted avoids any uncertainty and skips the arrival queue entirely.
If you do go this route, expect longer processing during peak season (July, August, December) — budget 30-60+ minutes at immigration.
The Insurance Question Nobody Explains Clearly
Separate from your visa, Zanzibar requires mandatory travel insurance through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC) — this is a $44 USD fee, charged per person, not per couple or per booking. You can pay this online in advance or on arrival. This is not optional and is separate from any personal travel insurance you already have.
What Else to Bring
- Passport valid 6+ months beyond your entry date
- Printed visa confirmation (or application ID + payment receipt if you applied online)
- Proof of return flight and accommodation
- Yellow fever vaccination certificate, only if arriving from a country where it's required

Is it per person or per couple? Both the visa fee and the ZIC insurance fee are charged per person. A couple traveling together pays both fees twice, not once.
