Understanding Zanzibar's Tides: What Every Visitor Should Know

If you're used to beach holidays where the shoreline barely moves, Zanzibar will surprise you. Here, the tide isn't a background detail — it shapes your whole day. Knowing roughly how it works makes the difference between a smooth beach day and an afternoon stranded on a sandbank wondering how you'll get back.

Two highs, two lows, every day

Zanzibar's coast runs on a semi-diurnal tide system: two high tides and two low tides in roughly 24 hours. The exact timing shifts by about 50 minutes each day, so a low tide that happens at 3pm today will happen closer to 4pm tomorrow. Heights vary through the month too: spring tides bring bigger swings, neap tides bring smaller ones.

Plan around the pattern, not a single number

The gap between high and low tide on a normal day is usually 5–6 hours, with a swing of 2–4 metres. On spring tides that swing can be much more dramatic. What matters practically: the beach in front of your hotel can look completely different at 9am and 3pm. Don't assume one tide time covers your whole trip.

The classic Zanzibar tide experiences

Low tide is when locals walk out to the reef to fish, collect seaweed, and visit sandbars. It's also when you can take the most dramatic walks across the shallows. High tide is when boats run more easily, swimming is deeper, and the shoreline looks postcard-perfect.

The Rock Restaurant is the famous example. It's perched on a rock just off Michamvi Pingwe on the east coast. At low tide you can walk straight out to it. At high tide, it's reachable only by a short boat trip.

How to actually check the tide for your trip

Tide times shift daily and depend on your exact location on the island, so a single number for "Zanzibar" isn't precise enough to plan around. There are tide-tracking apps and sites that give day-by-day predictions for the island. Worth a quick check the night before any beach day, boat trip, or reef walk you're planning.
