Jozani Forest: Zanzibar's Only National Park

Most of Zanzibar's big draws are on the coast. Jozani Forest is the exception, an inland stretch of forest about 35-40 kilometers southeast of Stone Town, and the island's only national park. It's home to the Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found nowhere else on earth, along with a mangrove boardwalk that most rushed visitors skip without realizing what they're missing.

What's actually there

Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park covers a mix of coral rag forest, swamp forest, and mangrove, the largest remaining stretch of natural forest on the island. The main draw is the red colobus monkeys, easy to spot and used to visitors, along with Sykes' monkeys, bushbabies, and over 40 recorded bird species. The mangrove boardwalk is a separate section of the visit, a raised wooden path through the mangrove swamp, worth doing even though it's easy to treat as an afterthought after the monkeys.

Entrance fee and what it includes

Entry is around $10 per person, paid in cash at the gate. The fee includes a mandatory park ranger guide, guided nature walks are the only way through, unguided walking off the marked trails isn't allowed. Don't pay anyone outside the park for "access," the guide is already part of what you're paying for at the entrance.

When to go

Arrive before 9am if you can. The red colobus monkeys are most active and easiest to see early in the morning, feeding rather than resting higher in the canopy. By late morning, tour buses start arriving in larger numbers and the monkeys tend to move higher up, harder to spot.

How long it takes

If you're visiting independently, just the entrance and guided walk, plan for around 1.5 to 2 hours to cover the monkey area, the forest trail, and the boardwalk properly. Organized half-day tours that include hotel pickup and drop-off usually run closer to 3 hours total, most of that is transport, not time in the forest.

Getting there

Jozani is about 35-40 kilometers from Stone Town, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car depending on where you're coming from. It's reachable by private car, taxi, or as part of an organized tour. If you're self-driving, no advance booking is needed for entry, tickets are bought at the gate.

Practical tips

Wear closed shoes, the boardwalk and forest trail have uneven ground in places. Bring insect repellent. The park is genuinely a national park, not a beach add-on, worth treating as its own stop rather than a rushed detour on the way to somewhere else.
